Samenvatting

A study of social differentiation of the use of leisure in the Netherlands, based on an examination of the relevant Dutch literature, esp the Central Statistical Office inquiry into the leisure habits of Amsterdam youth in 1955-56. A distinction is made between 'specific' and 'general' links between leisure use and such social factors as family, religious affiliation, and age group. General, as opposed to specific, links are concerned with the influence of the environment as a whole. The relations between the use of leisure and the following factors are analyzed: isolation and social contacts; status symbols; conformism and independence; and beliefs about social hierarchy. It is concluded that the use of leisure must be studied as a dynamic, not a static process, and that new leisure habits should be noted. I. Langnas.
