Samenvatting

A presentation of some theoretical and practical considerations on status and leisure, in connection with a survey of leisure habits of Amsterdam youth made by the authors for the Sociographic Workshop of the University of Amsterdam and published in 1959 as 'Jeugd in vrije tijd in Amsterdam' (Youth and Leisure in Amsterdam). The survey of 400 Amsterdammers aged 15 to 23 was made in 1958. Status is related to cultural structure as defined by Haveman and R. K. Merton and related to 3 types of values: (1) fundamental, (2) preferential, and (3) minority. It is also related to subculture, as defined by Haveman and J. A. A. van Doorn, eg with regard to skilled and unskilled labor. The relations between status and use of leisure are studied from the data of the survey, and the following conclusions reached: (a) the higher the status, the greater the N of S's who would spend their leisure in their accustomed ways; in the highest group, no thought was given to new kinds of leisure activities; and (b) almost half of the sample (49.3%) wished to continue their present leisure activities.
