Some forms of the use of leisure by youth are considered from the viewpoint of K. Lewin's field theory and on the basis of data from the 1955-56 inquiry of the Central Statistical Office into the leisure habits of Amsterdam youth. Youth is considered as a typical 'between' stratum. It is noted that: (1) youth shows a larger preference than adults for books and films of an aggressive character; (2) girls are less interested than boys in books and films which create fantasy situations-it is suggested that this is due to the fact that boys are more insecure in a modern society; and (3) sports are a favorite youth leisure activity because they offer good possibilities for prestige achievements, since they are highly structured, well-reported by the media and offer easy identification in small groups. 1.
