Samenvatting

A report on the 4th World Congress of Sociology, held at Milan-Stresa in Sept. 1959. It was attended by over 1,000 sociologists, but its organization left a good deal to be desired. The theme of the Congress was 'sociology and Society,' and its chief significance lay in the attendance of sociologists from Eastern Europe. Contributors included Fedoseev (USSR), who defined sociology as 'a general synthetic theory, a methodology of all social sciences'; S. Ossowski (Poland), who spoke on 'Conditions and Consequences of Social Planning'; Garwinkel on 'Commonsense Knowledge of Social Structures'; and T. Parsons (US) on the SofK. It is concluded that the presence of sociologists from Eastern Europe will also be the most important feature of future congresses. I. Langnas.
