Samenvatting

In the Netherlands the study of change of scale originated in the fields of regional planning and social geography. The process is analyzed on a more general, sociological level. Two hyp's are tested: (a) org of groups is stimulated by growth in size (eg, growing business firms); (b) increase in society dimensions results in changes in social structure (eg, the concentration of population in larger villages and the disappearance of smaller ones in a Dutch Rural district).
