Samenvatting

A comment is presented on the farewell lecture of Professor Van Doorn at Leiden University on the changing role of the sociologist in the Netherlands. Van Doorn stated that a 'new-style sociologist' had made his appearance in the Netherlands; his chief characteristic was that he was expected to make sociological contributions to the profession which employed him. But the sociologist's training was too theoretical to fit him for the practical tasks of his profession; he feared that such tasks would 'dirty his hands.' This academic bias is also fostered by the Assoc. of Soc Sci Researchers. It is concluded that the profession of 'sociologist' should remain 'open' and not be subjected to premature 'institutionalization.' I. Langnas.
