Samenvatting

A report on an experiment designed to determine changes in the norm perceptions and ego ideals in Dutch students aspiring to become group leaders. A sample of 200 most active Amsterdam students in the academic year 1960-61 was selected by a rating procedure. They were tested for their reactions to 61 pairs of opposite concepts, eg, active/passive; critical/uncritical. The C. E. Osgood method of measuring 'semantic differentials' was applied, and a distinction made between novices and experienced students. 7 hyp's were tested, and the following results obtained: (1) the novices tend to perceive most group norms projectively, esp those where they differ substantially from their ego ideals; (2) this projection tends to diminish in their socialization period; (3) the average ego ideal tends to displace itself towards the group norm during that period; (4) also, the average individual norm perception was closer to the group average than the average individual ego ideal was to the average group ego ideal.
