An analysis of the role of structuralism and functionalism in US sociology, presented as a reply to an article by H. P. M. Goddijn, 'Functionalism as an Approach in Sociology and Anthropology' in the same journal, 1961, 8, 2, Mar-Apr. It is contended that Goddijn either misunderstands US sociology or falls into stereotypes. His distinction between the 'structural functionalism' of T. Parsons and the 'functionalism' of R. K. Merton is termed a false dilemma; he is also held to be wrong to describe Merton as a mere empiricist and Parsons as a purely speculative thinker. I. Langnas.
