Samenvatting

An examination is presented of the relations between an evaluating and a value-free sociology, aimed at 'preventing a dilemma without issue.' Sociology, like other humanities, faces a fatal dilemma: it may be value-free but soc'ly worthless or evaluative but scientificly irresponsible. M. Weber's concept of Wertbeziehung (reference to values) has failed to provide a solution. The way out of the dilemma lies not through Weber's individualist sociology or through E. Durkheim's sociologism, but in developing a sociology that would be a 'science of reality,' and in making it overcome its subjectivity by a dialogue between sociologists. I. Langnas.
