Samenvatting

A review article on 5 recent books on unsocial behavior (the Dutch usage of 'unsocial' corresponds to the Amererican 'anti-social'): (1) Sociale integratie probleemgezinnen (Problem Families of Social Integration, The Hague: Gov Printers and Publishers, 1961)-is a report of the Advisory Commission on Fight Against Unsocial Behavior, appointed by the Minister of Social Work. It is a survey of work done, with little or no theorizing. (2) H. P. M. Litjens, Onmaatschappelijkheid: theorie en therapie (Unsocial Behavior: Theory and Therapy, Assen: Van Gorcum and Co, 1961)-contains a descriptive part and an analysis of methods of 'revalidating' unsocial individuals. (3) J. L. Haverda, Probleemgezinnen in de provincie Utrecht (Problem Families of Utrecht Province, Utrecht: Foundation for Social Work in Utrecht Province, 1960)-a report on a survey of unsocial behavior in Utrecht Province. 5 types of unsocial behavior are distinguished, including 'destructive consumption' found in 37% of the families. Unsocial behavior is found signif'ly higher in Catholic families. This and other conclusions are questioned by the reviewer. (4) A. J. M. van Tienen, De andersmaatschappelijken (Socially Deviant Individuals, Assen, Van Gorcum and Co, 1960)-the content is indicated by the subtitle: a sociological examination of the phenomenon of unsocial behavior for use in social work. A distinction is made between unsocial (onmaatschappelijk), based on a distinction between expected and actual behavior, and andersmaatschappelijk (soc'ly deviant), based on deliberate deviance. (5) H. Ph. Milikowski, Sociale aanpassing, niet-aanpassing, onmaatschappelijkheid (Social Adaptation, Inadaptation, Unsocial Behavior, Arnhem: Van Loghum Slaterus, 1961)-is a contribution to the discussion of problem Pam's. The existing literature is reviewed and the causes of unsocial behavior are examined. I. Langnas.
