Samenvatting

An examination of some recent literature on youth and youth culture, under the following heads: (1) History of the youth movement-which discusses G. Harmsen, Blauwe en rode jeugd (Blue and Red Youth, Assen, the Netherlands: Van Gorcum, 1961), a story of the rise and decline of the Dutch youth movement from 1853 to 1940. The colors refer to teatotallers (blue) and socialists (red); and W. Z. Laqueur, Young Germany (London, England: Routledge, 1962), tells the story of the German youth movement. (2) Careers of youth-considers M. P. Carter's Home, school and work (Oxford, England: Pergamon Press, 1962), a study of the careers of youths of 15-16 who left 5 HSchools in the English city of Sheffield; and R. J. Havinghurst, P. H. Bowman, G. P. Liddle, C. V. Matthews and J. V. Pierce, Growing up in river city, a report on an 'action-research program' on all 6th-graders of a Midwestern town of 44,000 people. (3) Youth culture-examines J. S. Coleman, Adolescent society (Glencoe, Ill: Free Press, 1961), a report on a 1957-58 survey of 8,000 HSch students of 9 Schools in the Chicago area; and E. A. Smith, American youth culture, concerned mainly with white, Mc, city youth. (4) Youth and Society in a wider perspective-examines F. H. Tenbruck's Jugend und gesellschaft (Youth and Society, Freiberg, Germany: Rombach, 1962), a broad sociological evaluation of youth. 2 comments are made: (a) a comparative study should be made of pre- and post-WWII youth; and (b) sociological studies of youth started with an emphasis on description and have become more analytical and critical.
