Samenvatting

A report on a survey designed to determine the relative professional hierarchies of men and women. The survey was based on oral interviews with 90 Males and 88 Females in Leiden, the Netherlands, in 1959, using a scale of professions prepared by the Dutch Central Statistical Office. 2 lists of rankings of professions were made, comparing the hierarchies of men and women. Feminine preferences ranged from MD and psychiatrist (200 and 198, respectively) to unskilled laborer, charwoman and bathroom attendant (all of these, 2). It is concluded from the data that the fact that women also exercise professions which are practiced by men has an influence on men's evaluations of these professions: they tend to be evaluated as more lowly.
