Samenvatting

A study of 'the two generations' of Dutch sociologists, separated by WWII. Dutch sociology had a period of rapid growth after 1945, for the following reasons: (1) the fast growth of the Dutch population, which created many social and planning problems; (2) the religious situation, with Protestants and Catholics keeping watch on each other; (3) the experience of the Nazi occupation swept away resistances to sociology; and (4) the existence of a considerable N of trained sociologists, esp from the University of Amsterdam. The Dutch sociologist' position improved steadily but was marked by some tensions (between theory and practice; graduate sociologists and descriptive sociographers; staff workers and authorities). After the war, a younger generation found its voice in the Sociologische Gids. Its chief differences with the older generation are a smaller concern with theory and a growing emphasis on empirical studies. I. Langnas.
