Samenvatting

The author's reply to a critique of his book, Het Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine (The Royal Naval Institute, no publisher, 1963) by W. Brinkman. The following answers are given to Brinkman's chief objections: (1) there is no clear expose of hyp's because there was no intention to test systematically a theory formulated beforehand; (2) ad hoc interpretations are justified in this case, cf. R. Merton's 'serendipity pattern'; (3) the betrothals, marriages and leave addresses of the cadets have not been used as indices of the cadets' external social contacts; and (4) the criticism of the cadets' role acceptance is based on a definition of 'role' that is not used in the book. I. Langnas.
