Samenvatting

An attempt is made to evaluate the position of social psychology as a discipline, based on quantitative analysis of articles published in its journals. The starting point is a statement by J. A. A. van Leent that the definition of social psychology as a scientific discipline is a problem of the relations between sociology and psychology. To test this statement, an analysis is made of articles on social psychology published in 10 American journals between 1950 and 1964 and recorded in the Annual Review of Psychology. A table offers the female of inter-references per 50 articles per journal; and a sociometric, ordinal and interval-scale level analysis is made. The journals are classified into: (1) predominantly psycholical or sociological; (2) predominantly social psychological; and (3) predominantly applied social psychological. It is concluded that social psychology has a mediating position between psychology and sociol which it maintains only partially. I. Langnas.
