Samenvatting

10 positions are presented on the humanistic and moral role of the social sciences, drawn from a PhD thesis, De oude plattelandbeschaving (The Old Rural Culture) accepted by the University of Rotterdam in 1965 and subsequently published by Van Gorcum in Assen. The positions, offered with a commentary, are: (1) the social sciences have failed to keep up with the post-WWII developments; (2) the Dutch dependence on US sociological methods has not helped to bridge this gap; (3) sociology has failed to develop a theory of culture; (4) social psychology is too psychol'ly oriented; (5) sociology lacks the historical dimension; (6) econ's has lost sight of the 'big questions;' (7) the social sciences have abandoned values and insights; (8) the churches have become conservative; (9) the churches have little to say about HR; and (10) there is need to create chairs for the teaching of 'humanistics' (humanistiek).
