Samenvatting

An evaluation of 2 books on methodology: (1) E. V. W. Vercruijse, Het ontwerpen van een sociologisch onderzoek: uitgangspunten en richtlijnen (The Designing of a Sociological Investigation: Starting Points and Guidelines, Assen: Van Gorcum, 1966). This book emphasizes the 'when, ' and 'why' of res rather than the 'how. ' This is esp true of Chpt III, which offers a systematic survey of all the stages and selection possibilities which appear in the design of a sociol'al investigation. (2) H. L. Zetterberg, On theory and veri- fication of theory (Totowa, NJ: Bedminster Press, 1965) : this is an even more limited treatment than that of Vercruijse. It is even further removed from concrete res techniques and offers less philosophical background. Its emphasis is on good reasoning. I. Langnas.
