Samenvatting

A discussion about L. Laeyendecker, Religie en conflict: de zogenaamde sekten in sociologische perspectief [Religion and Conflict: The So-called Sects in Sociological Perspective], Meppel, the Netherlands : J. A. Boom en Zn, 1967. New religious movements are seen as conflict groups, the supporters are 'disinheriteds', people who have found no peace in the current social and cultural situations. They are distinguished as: (1) SE disinheriteds; (2) cultural disinheriteds; and (3) psychological and social-psychological disinheriteds. Added factors to the creation of these new movements are: a certain measure of mutual communication between potential members; systematical recruiting, and often unfavorable political circumstances, if there is a leader available. Many movements began out of protest and conflict, but not all. Some are motivated through fright of illness and death, eg Christian Science, the Spiritualists. Laeyendecker limits himself to the Western world out of practical consideration, though it is mainly in non-Western societies where the connection between religion and conflict occurs. 2 different sects, both angry with the world, are distinguished--one will isolate itself from the world, the other will try to change the world. D. Ridgway.
