Sociology, Critique of Il Gadourek's concept of research methods and techniques

Samenvatting

Hypothesis described by Il Gadourek as the basic concept of research is not important in all types of research (Sociological research techniques, Arnhem, the Netherlands: Van Loghum Slaterus, 1967). His discussion of "explanatory research" proves once again the uselessness of this term. In discussing measuring, he emphasizes the technical procedures and lacks an evaluation of scales. His last chapter on the statistical testing of hypotheses is useful, but not completely satisfactory. J. Galtung's study (see SA 0104/D3999), discusses the procedure and problems of sociological research. In the part "Data collection" (discussion of selection of variables, and survey methods) and "Data analyses," the accent lies on the relevance and the methodology of the technique. He discusses hypotheses in terms of the datamatrix. In the chapter on theory, he touches on the advantages of the structural-functional theory. His study is systematic, profound, and varied. These works are important for the student of sociology. The first 4 chapters of Gadourek's book can be used by the beginning doctoral student, while the second part is of interest for the advanced doctoral student. Galtung's study is of value for the education of research specialists but presupposes a knowledge of statistics and methodology. 1 Table. K. Dillman.
