Samenvatting

Traditional Catholic voters, who accept the norm of their religion, vote for the KVP (Catholic party). Catholics not voting for KVP, and not accepting the norms will vote for "interest parties," PvdA (Labor Party) and VVD (Liberal Party). Those who still accept the norms will vote for noninterest parties which formerly were not forbidden by the Church, such as CPH (Communist Party) and PSP (Socialist Party) and PvdA. This hypothesis was found true in a survey (N=522). The structure of the independent group of voters can be described as mostly young and M. No significant statistical relationship seems to exist between independence and education, and between income and social-economic milieu. The results of this research were checked with the election of Feb 15, 1967. An important number of independent Catholic voters did vote KVP, but not because of religious dependence. This was further analyzed with the following results: (1) an interrelation exists between age and independence; (2) while there is no relation between education and independence, there is one between education and voting KVP; and (3) a relationship also exists between political involvement and voting KVP. 6 Tables, 1 Figure.
