Mathematics influence on humanities students

Samenvatting

First year humanities students study longer for the mathematics requirement and score lower. The cause is one of communication and of motivation. These factors were studied in detail in 1966-67 with a group of 150 humanities students. The following results were obtained: (1) the study direction is strongly influenced by the grades obtained in mathematics; (2) working together (how often, how long, when) did not seem to eliminate the negative forces; and (3) the positive attitude towards mathematics is less important than the belief in one's own capacities. The high school grades do not always prove to be a reliable prediction for success in further studies. Students proved to have realistic expectations and aspirations in their studies. Because of the r between a positive attitude and the examination results, high school should try to enforce the positive attitude. The problem of why the results of group study did become apparent in the examination is suggested for further study. K. Dillman.
