Samenvatting

In spite of the numerous studies in industrial sociology this branch of sociology has not developed a coherent theory. One of the reasons for this might be that industrial sociology has always been regarded as a source of empirical information for general sociology. The question is raised whether industrial sociology can be considered a part of organizational sociology. Industrial sociology studies: (1) the institutional organization of the working conditions, (2) the legitimacy of corporations, (3) the relations between employee and work, and (4) the adaptation of the local organization to the regional environment as part of a social structure. An organizational-sociological approach, following the US model, considers the organization as a closed system and therefore gives a too passive role to the industrial organization. The partial approach to these problems by organizational sociology is possible but would decrease the strict theoretical conception which organizational sociology tries to master and its comparative character. This could be prevented if organizational sociology limited its field to the phenomenon of production within the society. K. Dillman.
