Samenvatting

This period is marked by an increase in studies in this field both in the US and in the Netherlands. Organizational sociology has contributed more to general sociology than to the formation of its own theory. The question is raised whether organizational sociology has contributed to the social scientific view of organization processes and forms. Still too little empirical research has been done. There is however more use of models from outside, and more interest for the social structure of the industrial organization in relation to the social environment. The system-model, an organization seen as a closed unity, is often replaced by a party-model that considers the organization as a totality composed of different elements each with its own interests. A discussion of studies in organizational sociology is presented: (1) short overview studies: R. Mayntz, "The Study of Organizations," Current Sociology, 1964, 13, 3--this is a systematic and complete study. W. R. Scott, "Theory of Organizations," in Handbook of modern sociology, Chicago, Ill: Rand McNally, 1964. This work is less complete, but more detailed than the above. (2) Introductions: D. Katz and R. L. Kahn: THE SOCIAL-PSYCHOLOGY OF ORGANIZATIONS, New York/London: Wiley, 1966. This study is based on Parson's model of the structural-functional system of the organization. It is a coherent study but poor on empirically based conclusions. M. Crozier, (see SA 13:2/65B5078), is the first study to use the party-model. (3) The handbook: J. G. March, Ed, Handbook of organizations, Chicago, Ill: Rand McNally, 1965, is divided in discussion of concepts, methodology, specific institutions and applications. (4) Collective works: A. H. Rubenstein and C. J. Haberstroh, Eds, Rev Ed, Some theories of organization, Homewood, Ill: Irwin/Dorsey, 1966. This study puts too much emphasis on industrial studies. (5) Dutch publications: J. A. A. van Doorn: Social inequality and social management. Workers and employees in organization and society, Utrecht the Netherlands: Bijleveld, 1963. J. V. H. Pennings, A Contribution to organization of reorganization methods, Leiden, the Netherlands: Universitaire pers, 1966. K. Dillman.
