Samenvatting

Most studies on leadership see social and instrumental leadership as the most important factors. A third factor, the Individual Prominence, is tested with the IP-scale of M. E. Shaw (Decisions, values and groups, Vol I, Oxford, England: Pergamon Press). It still has little empirical verification however. A research was done with the IP-scale and a shortened version of the OHIO-scale in a semi government agency. Leadership dimensions (social, instrumental, balance between the 2) and other variables (satisfaction with work and superior, and influence on work process) were tested. These leadership dimensions and variables were tested with IP-scores of the leading personnel, with executive personnel and with the lower "white-collar." The IP-score was negative for the individuals who attribute to themselves a high IP and for the group they manage. The IP-factor depends upon the situation: a high IP is necessary in an unstructured situation; in a low bureaucratic institution little need exists for leadership as defined by IP. 4 Tables. K. Dillman.
