Samenvatting

Traditional patronage systems were grounded in land-ownership and utilized rural elite manipulations through debt-bondage, economic control, and other forms of servitude-often called the 'culture of repression'. With the rise of charismatic peasant guerrilla leaders in Mexico (Zapata), Bolivia (Rojas), Peru (Blanco), and Brazil (Juliao), a shift in allegiances from land-owner patrons to political revolutionaries occurred. However, after land reforms through guerrilla efforts, peasant leaders often became landowners with a patron-type function or revolutionary groups were confederated and compromised to a mc organizational framework. These organizations became so monopolistic that the peasants were once again dependent. Patronage is a dynamic phenomenon. It is often broken up and replaced with more participatory forms of patronage which give the peasants more benefits. T. Babitsky
