Samenvatting

A comparison of the formal structure of the marching band and the informal nature of the rock group may lend some insight into the structure and influence of the formal organization. Organizations have a dual nature in that they exert socializing pressure on their members, at the same time giving the member potential to realize himself. It can be hypothesized that the formal group emphasized the socialization aspect, and the informal group the personalization process. To test this, 25 members of rock groups and 25 members of a marching band, all of whom lived in the province of Groningen and who were matched on the basis of age, sex, religion, occupation, and place of residence, were interviewed in 1968. Members of the formal marching band had more conformist tendencies, felt that they should join some organization, and were socially rather than personally oriented. They tend to deviate less from societal norms and attend movies, theatre, sports, etc. less often than do members of the rock group. Due to the nature of this study, it was not possible to obtain 2 entirely representative test samples. It will be interesting to see if these results on formal vs informal organizations are borne out in further studies. 2 tables. P. Tiersma
