Measuring dogmatism

Samenvatting

A preliminary study of dogmatism is presented to encourage further research with the use of certain valuable methods as tools. The concept of dogmatism was developed by M. Rokeach (The open and closed mind, New York, NY: 1964). It differs from the concept of authoritarianism, in that the latter has generally been associated with rightist tendencies. Dogmatism involves not only an authoritarian view of life, but also intolerance of opposing viewpoints and the negation of contrary information. Rokeach developed 40 statements which proved useful in determining the level of dogmatism. These were translated into Dutch and formed the basis for further research on this question. The statements were originally in a specific order. They were presented in that order to 101 students and in random order to 98 other students. The latter test seemed to be more trustworthy, although little is known about validity at this point. Further research is warranted. 2 appendices. P. Tiersma
