Role of teachers in higher education

Samenvatting

Cooperation among faculty members was studied on the basis of 5 university departments, each of which had from 3 to 5 specializations. Coordination within and among dept's has traditionally been weak, although normative control by the faculty themselves is preferred above bureaucratic control from outside. This requires a certain degree of cooperation among faculty members. The questions of interest were based on how faculty members feel about cooperation with others, and to what extent behavior reflects those feelings. A questionnaire was sent to 479 faculty members in regard to several specific areas of possible cooperation. 374 responses were narrowed to only those from the dept of chemistry, a total of 183. This dept has 5 subdept's. Within specializations, the degree of coordination was high. The norm for cooperation among specializations was significantly lower. The level of cooperation between students and faculty was about the same as that for cooperation within specializations. The issue of communication with students demonstrated no significant differences according to subdept, although on the other questions this was a relevant factor. Relationships between faculty and students showed the least tension in that the difference between theory and practice was very low, which may indicate that what the faculty wishes to achieve in terms of cooperation, it can actually achieve. 3 tables.
