Samenvatting

The semantic differential technique can be used as a basis for the development of a test to determine attitudes toward ur design. However, in the semantic differentiation test, the relations between scales may fluctuate depending upon the object. It was therefore decided to hypothesize the existence of certain clusters, which would later be tested. Three different groups of people were asked to place the scales into the categories: prosperity, beauty, liveliness, spatial impression, and atmosphere. Three streets in Wageningen were chosen and evaluated by 62 persons, a subgroup of the 1st panel. The results were analyzed by the rotation method according to the Varimax principle. A large number of scales came under the 'atmosphere' column, and the cluster 'prosperity' also scored above the minimum level of .50. The use of the 7-point scale had a number of advantages over the 5-point scale. 1 table. P. Tiersma
