Samenvatting

It has long been hypothesized that there is a positive relation between satisfaction with work and the number of absences due to sickness. This has been confirmed in studies done on the level of a factory or other work group, but not on an individual basis. On a larger level, other possible influencing factors are not as significant as they are on an individual level. One of the most obvious and important of these factors is the question of whether the worker is in fact sick, since certain people tend to be sick more than others. Studies have shown that the factor most closely correlated with the number of days missed because of sickness, was the number of medical complaints. Isolating the variables that may lead to calling in sick is not a simple matter. It is necessary to more exactly delimit the researched hypothesis. Workers in an ur factory were divided into those above and below 45 years old. It was felt that those above 45 would have a greater work ethic than their younger colleagues. The younger workers showed a definite relation between medical complaints and days missed due to sickness, whereas older workers missed more often when they were dissatisfied with their work. 3 tables.
