Macrosociological research in Surinam

Samenvatting

As part of a project to study planning in developing nations, the sociographic institute of the University of Amsterdam conducted research in Surinam for a period of 4 months in the summer of 1969. The goal of the project was to make possible a social development strategy which could change undesirable situations into desirable ones. Organizations were studied as of central importance to development. The survey involved various techniques, most important of which was the interviewing of heads of households carried out by 20 Surinamese school teachers. Questionnaires were sent to md's or presented to classes of elementary school children. Interview agreement rate was over 95%, probably because Surinamese teachers were used as interviewers. People responded favorably to teacher questioning because of their prestige in the community and because they spoke the local language. The questionnaire's in the elementary schools may not be reliable since many children at that educational level had much difficulty with Dutch. The relating and quantifying of growth, spreading, and participation in organizations is more difficult than was expected. P. Tiersma
