Samenvatting

In both the Netherlands and Norway, the study of sociology on the university level began shortly after WWII. The impetus for this in Norway was largely provided by the philosopher Arne Naess. The founder of sociology in that country is Eilert Sundt, who made extensive studies of Norwegian life in the middle of the last century. In 1950 the Instit for Social Research was founded to promote the research of sociological questions. The institute has only a small administrative staff, but in the past few years has sponsored much valuable work. The number of tenured professors in sociology has increased from 1 only 5 years ago, to 7 at the presenty, more and more sociologists have begun work in policy-making bodies. Norwegian sociology has tended to view society critically, and has fought for reform in institutions which need it. A great deal of research has gone into the legal system, economics, politics, and internationalism. The quality of Norwegian sociological work has been high, and its impact felt far beyond Norway's borders. P. Tiersma
