Academic colonialism of underdeveloped nations

Samenvatting

It is interesting to think what the Dutch reaction would be if the Netherlands were suddenly invaded by Swedish sociologists and were to become culturally oriented almost entirely to that country. Such reflection may give some perspective as to how the so-called underdeveloped countries feel about being patronized by more materially developed nations. The concept of 'underdeveloped' is a relative one. Countries which might be seen as underdeveloped by some may be regarded as developed by neighboring nations. It is an oversimplification to view the world in terms of the dichotomy poor-rich or western-nonwestern. The Netherlands must free itself from the limited, ahistorical view of North American sociology, and return to honoring the work and ideas of the 18th and early 19th century European sociologists. P.
