Employment of Dutch sociologists

Samenvatting

There is little information on the types of jobs Dutch sociologists find after receiving degrees. A short questionnaire was developed which covered data of a personal nature, data about education, and job data. Of the 50% of sociologists living in the "Randstad Holland," most were found in the province of South Holland. About 25% are women and the mean age is 33.5 years. Women spend an average of 2 years longer to get the PHD degree. Female sociologists seem to be employed less often than their male counterparts. Somewhat more than 20% of all sociologists have found work in a government capacity, another 20% in social services, and 25% in university education. There are many transitions from one sector to another after the first job, perhaps because many accept any job immediately after graduation and later have the opportunity to be more discriminating. The earlier it was that the degree was obtained, the more chance is there that the person will be engaged in teaching rather than research. Further research should compare these data with that for other disciplines. 16 tables, 2 graphs, 1 figure. P. Tiersma.
