Samenvatting

Mobilization consists of movements or campaigns to activate the masses into some process of change. Nonparticipation in or opposition to mobilization may be considered resistance. A number of social groups, in some or all circumstances, will not heed or resist attempts to mobilize. Isolated tribal groups are often suspicious of anything foreign and generally do not participate in the political life of a nation. Indigent peasants and agricultural workers may not heed the call to mobilize, distrusting ideas coming out of the city. Those who are relatively affluent are difficult to mobilize, since they have a vested interest in protecting the status quo. This is not only true of the uc, but may also pertain to the client-patron relationship, or to those who are economically advantaged within their own social group. Those who are strongly involved in nonpolitical activities (ie the charismatic movement) will be difficult to mobilize. The nature of the organizers of a mobilization attempt will influence the ease with which the masses allow themselves to be activated in a particular movement. P. Tiersma.
