Process of political mobilization

Samenvatting

The process of mobilization is a universal one. When mobilization was taking place on a large scale in non-western countries after WWII, sociologists were not sure how to approach it. Since then, some progress has been made in defining and analyzing the process. Mobilization involves an accelerated process of change, which can be characterized by the term 'leap'. It is possible to speak of a cultural leap when problems are redefined in terms of a value structure, often with concepts such as utopia. The societal leap involves the inset of various societal institutions, which are made directly responsible to the movement. Often parliament is disbanded and the nation is led by a single charismatic leader who seeks direct contact with the people. The temporal leap involves wanting too much too fast. This may cause a type of demobilization. The situation in the third world is complicated by two sociostructural characteristics: immobile sc's and a lack of superregional integration. Frequently in these areas, mobilization defeats its own ends in that the mobilization of regional units leads to confrontation between regional groups. Many movements lose much of their force through their inevitable bureaucratization. P. Tiersma.
