Student reform in West German universities

Samenvatting

Students and professors have throughout the years tended to form a subculture of their own. Fraternal organizations were very strong among German students before the war. Now students may often be recognized by their hair styles or clothes. The overt image has changed, but the inclination to form a separate subculture has remained. Participation in this type of group is more significant for the individual student than is class attendance. Members of this type of organization share a similar world view, which recently has been leftist political ideology. The class struggle, no longer really applicable to German society, has been extended to the university situation, where the students struggle against the professors, in whose hands most of the power lies. Thus there are attempts by the students to achieve parity in the decision-making apparatus; professors, academic assistants, and students each getting 33% of the representation. The changes in the university may bring about a major revision in the higher education of West Germany in that there may be more vocationally, religiously, and militarily-oriented colleges and universities.
