Samenvatting

The student doing apprentice research is in a difficult position, ie, he is responsible for what he does, but is also in need of supervision. A serious problem which can arise with apprentice research is that of involvement in local political and other issues. This was especially evident in a group project which was conducted in Spain recently. The Spanish agency in charge wanted abstracts of the results of the investigations, but often extreme caution had to be taken when sensitive material was involved. The apprentice research gave the students valuable insights into some of the problems they would face when they went into the field alone. P. Tiersma.
