Samenvatting

In doing fieldwork, anthropologists often have to suppress their own identities which usually leads to severe personal and moral problems. In order to maximize rapport, the anthropologist has to practice opportunistic ways of impression management. This poses a serious moral dilemma: how far can a scientist go in fooling his informants? During one year of fieldwork in a traditional orthodox Calvinist village, different strategies were developed for approaching the various groups in the village. The investigator was not able to live up to existing standards of ethical behavior for social scientists; those standards are not useful guides to conduct in the field. Modified AA.
