Samenvatting

To demonstrate the importance of models for the accumulation of knowledge in sociology, special attention was paid to the "theory-model" method of D. Willer, as outlined in scientific sociology (Englewood Cliffs, NJ: 1967). The application of this method was undertaken to determine how the activities of heart and liver patients were affected by their operations. The data were taken from 22 heart patients and 18 liver patients and their wives. The object was to see why the patient's perception of his household tasks before and after the operation differed from that of his wife--if such was the case. The pros and cons of the method are discussed. 1 table. P. Tiersma.
