Samenvatting

Research into the question of supply and demand for the services of sociologists has been limited largely to the issue of supply rather than demand. The demand aspect was examined by analyzing advertisements for sociologists in the largest newspapers, weeklies, and sociological journals of the Netherlands, with the assumption that at least 50% of all positions are advertised in these media. The greatest demand for sociologists appears to be in business, whereas the majority of sociologists actually work in research and education (38.1%). The main task for which sociologists are wanted is in policy making. 20% have research as their primary function, and 11% have education as their main task. U education is the sector which increased most rapidly in the period from 1968 to 1970. Most positions do not involve work which is specifically sociological, but rather work where knowledge of sociology and research methods are needed. 5 tables. P. Tiersma.
