Samenvatting

J. Galtung's structural imperialism theory ("A Structural Theory of Imperialism," Journal of Peace Research, 1971, 2, 81-117), which uses the terms 'centre' & 'periphery', is useful for study of the influence of international & intranational relationships on city size distributions & migration in Third World countries. Some important facets of the theory of structural imperialism are presented & a hypothetical model of international dependence relations during the 1960's is developed. In relation to this model, a number of hypotheses are formulated. The most important city pattern is that city size distributions--rank, size, primary, & intermediate distributions--do not correlate with level of development but with the center or periphery position in the system of international relations. A confirmation of these hypotheses could give the study of city distributions new impetus. In the field of migration, the hypotheses developed by the application of Galtung's model add a structural dimension to the predominantly sociopsychological & individualistic migration conceptualizations of the past. 7 Figures.
