Samenvatting

A study of the academic job market for sociologists in the Netherlands stresses the increasing unemployment of sociologists, which is most evident among those under 34 years old. Previously, a 6-month period of unemployment was expected but the trend is worsening. Job security is particularly weak for part-time employment. Most of the SE problems are related to an explosive growth of sociology students in proportion to the smaller demand for them in the job market. No relation could be found between unemployment & area of specialization, although there were marked differences among the participating U's. Several possible solutions are suggested: (1) promotion of research projects, (2) introduction of more practical training as part of sociology studies, & (3) organization of programs for postacademic education.
