Samenvatting

C. H. Coombs' quadrant scheme facilitates the distinction between the different types of data with which behavioral scientists work. Different versions of the scheme were developed between 1953 & 1970. While a quadrant scheme had a fruitful influence on research, a careful analysis shows that it can be interpreted in different ways. While in previous versions the kind of data gathering technique forms an important starting point (as in the 'pairs of dyads' vs 'pairs of points' scheme), the distinction between types of data & the chosen analytical model is not satisfactorily maintained in the later versions (as in the 'dominance vs proximity' data). Although the designation of some kinds of data as 'QI' or 'QIII' is still used, the Coombs' scheme as an analytical instrument has lost in prominence. 2 Figures. Modified HA.
