Samenvatting

The shortcomings of present sociology are noted with respect to analysis of the role of sexuality in the affluent society. The theories of J. van Ussel (GESCHIEDENIS VAN HET SEKSUELE PROBLEM, [History of the Sexual Problem], Meppel: 1968), N. Elias (UBER DEN PROZESS DER ZIVILISATION. SOZIO-GENETISCHEN UND PSYCHOGENETISCHEN UNTERSUCHUNGEN, [On the Process of Civilization. Sociogenetic and Psychogenetic Investigations] Bern/Munchen, Federal Republic Germany, 1969), & N. Luhmann (LIEBE ALS PASSION [Love as Passion], Dortmund, Federal Republic Germany: 1969), are reviewed in detail. These theories are then applied in an attempt to analyze the evolution of sexuality's role in an affluent society in general, & in the Netherlands, in particular. Regret is expressed that a "social sexuology" does not yet exist. I. Verluyten.
