Samenvatting

A review of developments in the sociology of science. In this area, the sociology of science, ie, a study of the social aspects of science in which the development of the cognitive aspects are considered as "unproblematic," has been challenged by T. S. Kuhn. In his view, cognitive & social aspects of science are mutually related. 2 recent contributions, those of M. Mulkay & D. Crane also follow the Kuhnian perspective. As an alternative approach, 2 control mechanisms in the system of science can be considered, eg, the orientation to informal relations & reputation, both of which refer to the social as well as the cognitive structure of science.
