Samenvatting

A statistical model on the phenomenon of intergeneration mobility is constructed, focusing on the influence of education on SM. This is based on the premise that there is an educational level--probably somewhere on the level of "secondary modern"--where upward & downward intergeneration mobility will be in balance for the whole group on that level. Statistically, this balance would take the form of a curve. Utilizing census data, it was possible to test the hypothesis resulting from this theory. Indications are as follows: (1) the % distribution of the mobility was fairly normal, & (2) increase in educational level averaged an upward mobility. Thus, SS is highly influenced by educational level, however, changes can be expected in the future. This change will affect the prestige attached to professions as well. It may be necessary for sociologists to alter their present methods of studying intergenerational mobility. 2 Tables. Modified HA.
