Articles, books, & research regarding the emancipation of women reveal different definitions of 'emancipation', & are related to differences in methods of research. Illustrations are given based on actual research in the Netherlands. A first type of research is related to that definition of emancipation which investigates the extent to which women, as compared to men, participate in the total culture. Census data (especially on participation in the LF) are used for this type of research. The second method is generally connected with the opinion that emancipation begins with the consciousness of women of their position in the social structure. Research is directed toward measuring this consciousness. A third type of research is linked to the idea that the emancipation of women (& of men) can only succeed in a 'feminized' society. Finally, the consequences that research results may have for government policy are pointed out. Modified HA.
