Samenvatting

The reduction of complexity is discussed as a central area of concern in Luhmann's work & is analyzed in relation to the notions of world & world horizon (E. Husserl). Complexity is defined as the sum of all possible events with respect to which the world can be perceived as a problem. The reduction of complexity appears because of the limited possibilities man has to deal with complexity in his daily accumulation of experience. System building is the way in which complexity can be met. However, complexity can be increased as well as reduced. Hence, man's relationship to complexity is characterized by what Luhmann calls hazardous selectivity. Luhmann's theories have been widely discussed from an ideological (C. Grossner), philosophical (J. Habermas), anthropological, ethical, & sociological point of view. Possibilities & restrictions of the theory within the field of sociology are discussed with respect to a number of central issues: (1) E. Morin's theory of the macrohistorical development of man & his concept of human nature, (2) systems analysis & the disorderliness of everyday life, (3) the notion of a restricted number of universal problems & of alternative solutions, as formulated in the anthropological idea of culture patterns, & (4) the conception of science itself as the organization of thinking & action around areas of uncertainty.
