Samenvatting

The grievances of Dutch farmers peaked in 1974, when for the first time nationwide farmer demonstrations were held. A study of the participants in these demonstrations is presented. In 1975, a sample of 286 farmers was interviewed in the communities of Denekamp & Ootmarsum. Farmers from prospering farms were more politically active than farmers from stagnating businesses. There was a strong relationship between membership in a farmer's association & general political participation. High efficacy (political self-esteem) is seen as a cause for political participation. The form of the demonstrations & the survey show that the farmers want political attention, but are by no means radical or against the political system. 2 Tables. W.Z.
